Saturday night fiber

I love disco music and disco fashion. It's crazy, shimmering, glamurous, floating, colorful, exaggerated, futuristic, vivid, fun and versatile as the crowd in any great party. It's all about light effects; metallic fibers, sequins and shimmer that look flashy under disco lights. Saturday night forever!

Disco is the weekend
Disco being sexual
Disco is knowing the moves
Disco is being intense
Disco is an irresistibly catchy chorus and matching video art
Disco is queer and mysterious
Disco is uplifting
Disco is being very cool
Disco is not holding back with metallic eyeshadow
Disco is wearing your favorite comics
Disco is being a superhero from outer space

Disco is letting yorself go

Milano in 1950's

Milano is not considered to be the most beautiful city of Italy. It was bombed in the end of the war and and its "rationalistic" architecture of 1950's and 60's is often criticized. I think it has it's charm. Milano has urban rhythm. It is a lot of work and a lot of fun and you have to love it as it is.

Unhappy Holidays

I am so glad Billie Holiday never did a christmas album.

It's the season to be jolly
but christmas carols make you go like this
Somehow you have to pull the role
You can cover yourself with cool eyewear, but you can't hide your inside
Best thing would be to cuddle up with your best friends
Perhaps have a drink or two
talk about your love, life and stuff the way you always do
and not worry about buying presents
or doing things that you honestly don't enjoy
Just because you are alone, it doesn't mean you should be lonely
You might not always live up to other peoples' expectations
But in the end you are at your best doing your thing your way.

"Ballet is mimic poetry, a dream made alive"

Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
Paris 1870's, 1880's
Degas' ballerinas are among iconic images of the last century. Degas was able to capture movement and position of the dancer. The ballerinas are psychologically deep. They are not only idealistic pictures of dance performance, they are realistic portraits of young women of lower society class struggling to be "the dream alive" in a make-believe world of silk flowers and colorful tulle.

My first post

This blog is my attempt to I share what is going on in my mind about costume design. First I will try to make a short definition of costume design

Costume designer normally works with theater, film or dance performances with other designers and artists. Costume designer is not a fashion designer, even though sometimes the work may be have similarities to industrial design.

Costume designer is not the person who makes the costumes - well, in principle. In order to design, one needs to understand the pattern and the realization of the garment. These are more technical skill that require very much practice, all my love and respect to those who are really good with this. Great design always requires expertise of many people.

Costume designer is not a fashion stylist. Fashion trends have their place in the street and they need to be taken in consideration but the aim of costume is not to be trendy or flattering, if not so specifically intended.

The costume comes alive on the stage. On stage there are things such as light, distance and action. Some actors can use any object as costume. On stage different rules apply. The costume is more than a piece of clothing. It is more than aesthetics. It is something that is used to express something - an emotion, mood, personality, gender, society, status... the same things we express with clothes every day, but in the context of the prevailing performance.

In my opinion, in short, costume design is about studying the culture, understanding and portraying the individual and creating worlds. So, this blog is a place to share my thoughts. I am fan of cinema, theater, fine art and history and I like to share stuff. Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome.
